Sunday Celebration Notes from Libby Tigner
Celebrating God’s Love Every Sunday at 10 am.

This Sunday, while Jerry is on vacation (he’s officiating at his and Kay’s youngest daughter’s wedding in Maine), I will continue with my sermon series based on a new book by John Buehrens and Rebecca Ann Parker called A House for Hope. Using the metaphor of house as that thing that provides structure, shelter, nurture and welcome, they explore ways that progressive religion can bring hope and purpose into our 21st-century lives.

Cranes of Remembrance ...
     Cranes of Peace ...
          Cranes of Gratitude!

After a beautiful service of remembrance and a great forum with Paul Chappell talking about ending war, the cranes are mostly cranes of gratitude. For me there is so much gratitude for the many, many hands that folded and hung cranes. There is much gratitude for so many who helped with both the evening service and the forum. We are a very fortunate community, indeed, to have so many willing to work so hard. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! And peace.

Stewardship Moment - For Such a Time as This
From Robert Stapp

One of our recent lay leaders in the service was Terry McKiernan, and she shared these words with us about stewardship:

“Robert F. Kennedy once famously said that each time we stand up for an ideal, or act to improve the lot of others ... we send forth a tiny ripple of hope, and … those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

“By supporting our church in its mission, we stand up for our ideals; we improve the lot of others; and we work to fight injustice and oppression. Our offerings can indeed create many, many ripples of hope as we build a church where no one is rejected and all are joyously welcomed and valued. Our gifts can make a powerful difference. Please give generously….”

When we support the mission of First Church by giving of our time, our talents or our treasure, we stand up for our ideals and we can fight injustice and oppression.

For Such a Time as This … you can send ripples of hope to the community.

Humanitarian Day Comes to the Drop-In Center
By Brad Lara-Gagne

ILM (Intellect, Love, Mercy) Foundation started Humanitarian Day 10 years as a one-day event during Ramadan in Los Angeles. Humanitarian Day has expanded to 13 counties in California as well as doing international work in countries like Ghana. In response to what happened on September 11, 2001, Iman Saadiq Saafir, father of the ILM foundation, decided that actions speak louder than words and created the Coalition for Human Dignity, helping the homeless as well as many other worthy causes in LA. This will mark the second year they have come to Long Beach, and we are fortunate that the coalition will be partnering with the Drop-In Center on Sunday, August 29. The coalition along with South Coast Interfaith Council will spend the day serving food, passing out hygiene kits and school kits and providing medical care to our guests in the form of a visiting nurse and doctor.

Drop-In Center logoAnyone from First Church who would like to join us would be very welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet members of the Muslim community here in Southern California as well as people of many other faiths who will be participating. There may be new faces in the congregation on that Sunday and many gathering in the courtyard. There will announcements and a blessing given between 11:45 a.m. and noon before we open our doors to the Drop-In Center at 12:30 p.m.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Brad Lara-Gagne at bradg63@aol.com.
