Sundays at First Church

Services of Celebration

Our Sunday morning Services of Celebration begin at 10 a.m. They open with a time of community building as we share the events and parish joys and concerns that are important to our life together. We then transition into our service, which always include Words With the Children, an anthem from our Sanctuary Choir, and a thought-provoking sermon. We like to say two things about our services: “Don’t check your brain at the door,” and “Think for yourself – your minister could be wrong.”

Throughout the year on various Sundays, the Sacrament of Communion is a part of the service. We practice an “open table” which means that everyone is welcome to participate in communion. On Sundays when communion is not a part of the service, it is offered after the service and is led by one of our ministers.

Adult Education

An hour-long class for adults is offered at 8:30 each Sunday morning in the Klar Education rooms in Pilgrim Hall. These classes focus on some aspect of Bible study, theological exploration or spiritual development, and are usually led by one of the minister.

Sunday Forums

On selected Sundays, there are Forums that follow our Service of Celebration. These usually focus on an issue of social justice, and are often sponsored by our Open and Affirming Committee or our Board of Outreach and Social Justice.

Children and Youth

There are classes for all ages of children and youth on Sunday morning, which run concurrent with the Sunday Service of Celebration. Children and youth join the adults in the sanctuary at 10 a.m., and then leave for age-appropriate Church School classes after Words With the Children. Nursery care and child care are available beginning at 8:30 a.m.
